INTRODUCTION

 

There are various types of Student Internship Programmes (SIP) in USM.

Compulsory: For professional programmes like Engineering, Health and Allied Health Sciences, Communication, Accounting, Management, Housing and Building, Computer Sciences, the SIP is compulsory for students. The duration and regulations of the SIP follow the requirements of the respective professional bodies. The SIP is mandatory in some of the programmes in other Schools.

Options/Electives: Although the SIP is not mandatory for some programmes but, students are strongly encouraged to undergo workplace exposure.

 

SIP is not required for students under the distance learning programmes.

 

DEFINITION


The SIP is a full-time attachment of students in industries/organisations that can provide suitable learning exposure/experience. 

 

OBJECTIVES

  1. To provide an extension of the academic classroom training at the university.
  2. To provide early workplace exposure to students.
  3. To enhance network between the employment sector with the university.
  4. To allow students to apply their academic knowledge to the actual work environment.
  5. To enhance the communication and presentation skills of students.
  6. To build the self-confidence of students.
  7. To introduce the discipline/specialisation and quality of students to the employer.

 

IMPLEMENTATION 

The academic coordinator/supervisor must agree and approve the placement that is being offered. A site supervisor from the organisation will be appointed.

The academic supervisor will make supervision and evaluation visits to the training site and have discussions with the site supervisor.

For some programmes, students must attend a practical/preparatory course/workshop before the commencement of the SIP.

Students need to submit a report at the end of the SIP.

The SIP placement, whether locally or overseas, must be suitable and related to the field of studies of the student.
