Academic Staff Attachment (ASA) to the industry means being physically present in the industry for a specific duration with the purpose to strengthen the university-industry relationship/network, understand the work culture, needs and industrial objectives. Possibly, a short-term project can be arranged. Smart-partnership between the university and industry is one of the main factors to raise standards and quality in specific fields. Input from industry on the current practices, current technology and expertise needed are very important for academic development and sustainability as well as research and consultancy in the university.
As stated in the National Strategic Higher Education Plan (NSHEP), unemployment amongst graduates are often related to a lack of specific skills needed by the industry. Employers’ negative perception regarding the quality of local graduates compared to oversea trained graduates, still existed. One of the effective ways is to enhance excellence traits, innovativeness and creativity in the local universities through the staff attachment programme. This programme will be an important channel to inform the industry regarding the university’s research, innovations, consultancy, curricular academic, industry-community engage-ment potential as well as a channel for the university to receive input from the industry to strengthen the learning system in university.
