DEFINITION OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Community engagement refers to the process which organizations and individuals build ongoing and lasting relationships and apply a collaborative vision that benefits the community. It includes the process from the beginning by identifiying isssues, mobilizing relevent facilities and strategies that aim to improve community well-being towards changes. Elements of engagement, partnership, inclusion and sustainability are essential in ensuring social functionality and community well-being. Community engagement requires voluntary participation from all parties in producing knowledge exchange and facilities for mutual benefit.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER

Main condition for CE Grant:

  1. Application is open for all USM academia
  2. The project leader must be a full-time academia
  3. Project duration must within 6 - 12 months (one-off projects will not be consider)
  4. Has element of networking/ collaboration is required to produce publications
  5. Projects allocation is up to RM 10,000.00
  6. It is necessary to involve students and non-academic staff in project implementation
  7. Project cost will be financed by Community Network Office and stakeholder or community must state their commitment (finance or non-finance attribution); Proposed ratio 70% project allocation: 30% sponsor/ or other contribution)

Do's

  1. Continuous projects (Duration more that 6 months)
  2. Includes of activities of knowledge and science/technology transfer
  3. Clear objective of community development
  4. Projects that have clear phase of implementation to monitoring to ensure community sustainability
  5. Potential projects; 3 -5 STAR Rating

DON'TS

  1. One-off individual/group projects, less than 6 months implementation
  2. project form of CSR/ community services
  3. Short term execution
  4. No stakeholder cooperation in project implementation
  5. Potential projects; 1 -2 STAR Rating
